CGS 1763 Computer Operating Systems

This course focuses on the software operating systems that run today’s personal computers.  Emphasis will be placed on commands, functions, and terminology through practical instruction in the installation, configuration, and upgrade of operating systems.

CGS 2071 Spreadsheets

In this course, students gain basic and intermediate skills on MS Excel 2007 with the help of a series of hands-on training activities. Throughout the course, students study various MS Excel related topics and also learn how to prepare standard business forms with the application.

- CGS 2167/CGS 2110 Computer Applications

This course introduces a series of concepts necessary to make effective use of personal computers. Students achieve an understanding of what a personal computer can do, how it works, and how it can be used to create documents using word processing (MS Word 2007) and spreadsheet applications (MS Excel 2007) for personal and business use.  This course also teaches students how to prepare presentations by using MS PowerPoint 2007.  In the earlier versions of the course, students used MS Office XP and 2003.

- CGS 2510 Applied Spreadsheets

This course covers various topics related to MS Excel 2007.  Those course include creating workbooks, utilizing editing and formatting tools, using formulas and functions, employing creative formatting, building charts, working with multiple worksheets and lists, building templates, working with macros, using analysis and auditing tools, and utilizing database features and pivot tables.

- CGS 2820 Web Authoring

In this course, students explore the use of graphics and multimedia to develop Web-based applications. The course covers techniques for developing rich media using fundamental graphic design concepts and tools, and Web page content management techniques utilizing tables, links, and dynamic content.

- CIS 1760 Web Site Design Methodology

This course provides the foundation for Web site design required by today’s Web developers. The course includes Web design concepts, site development and management techniques, and basic Web technologies. Students develop basic Web pages containing text, graphics, hyperlinks, tables, and frames using popular Web development software (when Dr. Cetiner taught the course, students used MS FrontPage 2000/2003 and Macromedia Dreamweaver MX 2004).

- CIS 1821/CIS 1800 Web Content Development

This course covers a series of essential topics on designing Web pages. Using a text editor and a graphical user interface (GUI) editor, students learn to create Web pages containing text, hyperlinks, graphics, tables, forms, and frames. Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) and the basics of Extensible HyperText Markup Language (XHTML) are also covered as part of the course.

- Faculty Development course on Plagiarism (11/05 – 12/05)

This course focused on strategies for identifying plagiarism and preventing it from happening in courses, and it led a discussion on how to find methods to reduce the amount of plagiarism by students.

- LIS 2004 Introduction to Internet Research

This course provides instruction on the basic use of the Internet and the use of search engines.

- IS 346 Social Technologies (co-instructor: Dr. L. Olfman) (graduate course) (syllabus)

The purpose of this course is to learn the mechanics of various social technologies,including blogs, wikis, and discussion boards. The goal of the class is to understand the range of social technologies that are available, the range of capabilities they possess, how they can be used effectively, and how they can be modified to enhance their usability. The studio approach features hands-on in-class activities that enable students to share their learning immediately and to ask for assistance in understanding how specific social technologies work in practice. In addition to in-class activities some guest speakers participate in sessions to share their knowledge about building and managing social technologies.

Developed all the studio sessions of the course.

This course was given as part of the online training project called EGITEN-SELCUK (a follow-up project of EGITEN) (see Projects for details). The course was a modified version of with the course given in the EGITEN project.

- ESP 1 Applications of Information Technology (instructor: Dr. C. Akyel) (Turkish) (02/99 - 10/99)

This course was given as part of the online training project called the Certificate Program for the Training of Instructors in the Informatics Field (EGITEN) (see Projects for details).

The course was designed to teach participating instructors how to use a series of computer software, including MS Windows 95/98, MS Office 97, Netscape Communicator 4.5, and various freeware e-mail, telnet, and ftp applications. The course also provided learners with information on the TCP/IP protocol and the HTML language.
